520 ## $aThis study analyzes syntactic and semantic features of comparative idioms in English and Vietnamese. The thesis is aims at finding out the syntactic and semantic features of English comparative idioms in contrast to the Vietnamese ones, thus help the Vietnamese learners of English to have better understanding of these idioms and be able to use them effectively in practice.There are 4 research methods that have been used to collect data: qualitative method, quantitative method, descriptive method and contrastive method. In terms of syntactic features, some remarkable points about the similarities and differences of English and Vietnamese comparative idioms have been found. Firstly, both comparative idioms have comparative words between component A and component B as a bridge to connect these components. Secondly, component A disappears in structure like + B in English and structure Như + B in Vietnamese but the idioms still have their meanings. The last point is component B can not be disappeared in structure of idioms. The biggest difference between these two idioms is Vietnamese idioms use more various types of words than English ones in both comparing objects and compared objects. In terms of semantic features, idioms of comparisons in English and Vietnamese use symbols relating to geographic features. Besides, symbols of region are also mentioned in both English and Vietnamese comparative idioms. However, with different purposes, people in two nations have their own way to use idioms. While English people use comparative idioms to compliment, the Vietnamese use them to complaint. Furthermore, we have found that some idioms in both languages are originated from classic references in their own nations.
