The objectives of study are to find out the similarities and differences between the English politeness strategies for gift offers and those in Vietnamese and to provide some possible implications for teaching the English politeness strategies for gift offers to Vietnamese learners of English as a foreign language. The data are taken from survey questionnaires from English and Vietnamese people and then analysed to find out the similarities and differences in English and Vietnamese politeness strategies for gift offers. This research is conducted by using descriptive method and contrastive method. Brown and Levinson framework of politeness strategies was used to analyze the frequent use of use politeness strategies to compare between English and Vietnamese. The result of the study shows that the politeness strategies are used by all English and Vietnamese informants. ‘Direct offer’ is employed at the highest rate with English informants, whereas Vietnamese informants are popular with the strategy ‘wishes’. English and Vietnamese cultures have effect on the choice of politeness strategies. English people prefer expressing the feeling and emotions directly. In contrast, Vietnamese people favor using roundabout expressions to gain their aims. The study will become a useful tool for teachers of English to teach the culture to avoid misunderstanding.
