520 ## $aMy graduation thesis namely “An investigation into cultural factors affecting the translation ò idioms from English into Vietnamese” involves the study of idiomatic translation from cultural perspectives. In the main part of the study, the researcher gives out a written test for 30 students of Faculty of English in Hanoi Open University in order to test their familiarity and unfamiliarity with cultural factors affecting the translating English idioms into Vietnamese. Then the resulted are analyzed carefully to find out that idioms which related to cultural factors are really hard nuts for most students, included students in Hanoi Open University to translate them naturally in their mother tongue because there are a great number of mismatch between the two languages – represent for Orient culture and Western culture. In short, the cultural factors set the same idioms’ shade of meaning, but in different means of conveyance. It finds idioms which containing cultural factors problematic in deciphering and therefore experiencing a breakdown in their understanding and comprehension. Thus, many students have to struggle with learning and understanding these little gems of culture and creativity. It is clear that the percentage of familiarity with English idioms of students is still low. Therefore, it is advised that students of English focus on their own culture background and to use the context to derive the meaning of idioms in the target language.
