520 ## $aThis research aims to explore the syntactic and semantic characteristics of English idioms denoting Sadness and its Vietnamese equivalents in a contrastive analysis so as to find out similarities and differences between them. On the other hand, the descriptive and comparative methods have been chosen as major ones for this study. These are used in order to describe and identify the similarities and differences in term of syntactic and semantic features of the idioms denoting SADNESS in English and the Vietnamese equivalents. As a result, in the finding and discussion, the research has shown some phrasal structures of idioms denoting SADNESS in English and their Vietnamese equivalents are analyzed in turns to draw some typical features of idioms in terms of syntax in the two languages. Moreover, it illustrates some semantic fields of SADNESS in both languages and find out the similarities and differences which are also handled to help us understand more about the meaning transfer of natural language like idioms. In short, the research has shown the similarities and the differences in term of syntactic and semantic features of idioms denoting SADNESS in English and Vietnamese equivalents.
