520 ## $aThe study is conducted to provide an exhaustive description of English tag questions and Vietnamese equivalents in terms of structures and meanings as well as identify the similarities and differences between tag questions in English and Vietnamese equivalents in the Vietnamese version of The ideal husband by Oscar Wilder.It involves a descriptive, comparative and contrastive analysis of English tag questions and Vietnamese expressions. In the novel, there are totally 51 tag questions, including 37 with positive stems.“Phải không” or “có phải không” becomes the most popular way of translating them with 21 sentences to denote the speaker’s uncertainty about the truth of the proposition. Beside, three yes-no questions realized by “chứ” to expect the addressee’s confirmation, one with imperative stemto ask the addressee’s permission to do something and three with exlamative stems realized by nhỉ or phải khôngto seek agreement from the addressee. Two sentences with negative stems noticeably are converted into declarative sentences whist one tag question is converted into a statement. The present chapter has provided a description of the Vietnamese equivalents to English tag questions with declarative, imperative and exclamative stems in terms of linguistic form, function and meaning. However, it is generally accepted that complete equivalence of message, function and form between source text and target text is rare. A further study, if possible, should deal with the effect of age, gender, power and distance on frequency of use of English tag questions.
