520 ## $aResearch purposes: To find out means of refusal acts in English used in the bilingual novel “Gone with the Wind” by Margaret Mitchell and means of refusal acts in Vietnamese used in the bilingual novel “Gone with the Wind” by Margaret Mitchell as well as suggesting some implications for teaching and learning English refusals to Vietnamese learners of English effectively. Methods of the study: The main methods of this study are the descriptive and comparative methods supported by qualitative and quantitative methods combined with data collection and data analysis techniques. Results of the study: In this thesis, I collect, describe, and compare English refusals and Vietnamese equivalents based on the bilingual novel "Gone with the wind". The result of the study shows that the novel applies a lot of means of refusal acts, but when comparing the original and the Vietnamese translation, there is not much difference in the means of refusal acts. It is easy to understand because, during the translation process, translators need to respect the author's style and ensure high accuracy. With the the result of the study, I would like to offer some implications for teaching and learning English refusals to Vietnamese learners of English. Conclusion: The study is to conduct an investigation into English refusals with reference to Vietnamese equivalents based on the bilingual novel "Gone with the wind". In order to achieve this target efficiently, several theoretical backgrounds are presented to support the study. In addition, due to the limitation of time, reference materials, limitted data collected will certainly lead to unsatisfactory result of the study. Finally, mistakes and shortcomings are unavoidable. Therefore, readers’ comments will be of great significance to the author. This study might be updated or some other studies should also be conducted in the future.
