520 ## $aThis study examines English exclamations in relation to Vietnamese from a syntactic, pragmatic, and cultural standpoint. Finding out the linguistic and cultural characteristics of Vietnamese and English exclamations and talking about their similarities and differences are the main concerns. In order to accomplish this, the descriptive technique is employed to examine the linguistic and cultural characteristics of English exclamations in relation to Vietnamese and determine their syntactic, pragmatic, and cultural similarities and differences. The research mainly adopts a qualitative approach, supported by quantitative techniques such as frequency counts. Data include 200 prominent examples from David Copperfield and its Vietnamese translation by Phan Ngọc. Syntactically, these unique ways of expressing themselves in the two languages might take the shape of individual words, whole complete sentences. Also, exclamations can combine with another interjection or other word classes to form complete and incomplete sentence. In terms of pragmatics, exclamations have different functions to show anger, disappointment, surprise, sadness, regret, refusal, warn, happiness, support, request and the like. Furthermore, the cultural aspect is also embeded in exclamations of the two languages. The above features of exclamations and their similarities and dissimilarities are discussed in details in the following chapters.
