520 ## $aThis research investigates the effectiveness of semantic mapping in enhancing English vocabulary retention of learners in a secondary school in Hanoi, Vietnam. This research aims at assessing the effectiveness of student’s vocabulary skills, focusing on vocabulary knowledge, including pronunciation, spelling, stress, meaning, collocation and word relations. The study finds out to investigate students' attitudes toward the use of semantic mapping as an instructional strategy. Utilizing a mixed-methods research that combines qualitative and quantitative methods, this is a research action. The findings indicate notable enhancements in vocabulary retention among 50 ninth-grade students after the introduction of semantic mapping techniques. Furthermore, the study unveils increased motivation, heightened autonomy in learning, enhanced creativity, and improved classroom engagement among the participants. Nevertheless, despite these encouraging outcomes, the research highlights several challenges associated with semantic mapping, such as time constraints, peer pressure, feelings of being overwhelmed, and limited background knowledge. It is hoped that this research provides valuable insights into the potential of semantic mapping as a pedagogical strategy to improving vocabulary retention, particularly among ninth- grade students.
