520 ## $aThis study aims to examine how racist elements are represented in the novel "To Kill a Mockingbird" and how these elements are translated into Vietnamese in "Giết con chim nhại." Racism in literary texts is not only expressed through explicit racial slurs but also through descriptions, comparisons, and patterns of interaction, which makes it difficult to translate accurately. To address this issue, the study focuses on identifying key racial elements in the source text and analysing the translation strategies used in the Vietnamese version. The study employs a qualitative-oriented mixed-methods approach. The data are collected from selected excerpts of the novel that contain significant racial elements, along with their corresponding translations. These excerpts are analysed by classifying different types of racial elements and coding the translation strategies used, such as literal translation, softening, omission, and addition. The findings show that racism in the novel appears in both explicit and implicit forms, especially through institutional settings and character interactions. In the Vietnamese translation, the main meanings are generally preserved; however, some changes in tone and strength are observed, particularly when racially sensitive expressions are softened or standardised. The study contributes to translation studies by providing a clearer understanding of how sensitive racial discourse is handled in literary translation and offers practical implications for translators and students when dealing with similar texts.
