520 ## $aThis study examines the effectiveness of mind mapping in improving English speaking skills among Grade 6 students at a junior high school in Hanoi. Although mind mapping is widely used to support vocabulary and writing, its role as a pre speaking tool in Vietnamese lower-secondary EFL classrooms has received limited attention. To address this gap, the study explores how mind mapping affects students’ speaking performance and their attitudes toward speaking activities. A quasi-experimental design was conducted over twelve weeks with two Grade 6 classes: an experimental group using mind mapping in speaking lessons and a control group following traditional instruction. Data were collected through pre-tests and post tests measuring fluency, coherence, and vocabulary, along with questionnaires and focus group interviews. The results show that the experimental group made significantly greater progress than the control group. Students in this group improved notably in fluency, coherence, and vocabulary use, and a much higher proportion were able to sustain longer speech. In contrast, the control group showed only modest improvement. Qualitative findings also indicate that students found mind mapping helpful for organizing ideas, recalling vocabulary, reducing anxiety, and increasing participation.
