520 ## $aThe thesis examined translation strategies for culturally embedded words and phrases in Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell through the Vietnamese version by Dương Tường. The work came from my passion for the subject of translation and the observation that much earlier research focuses on plot, themes, and characters, while the cultural items have received less attention. This research employed qualitative and quantitative methods. The qualitative approach was used to identify cultural items and the translation strategies applied, while the quantitative approach measured the frequency and distribution of both the cultural items and the strategies employed. According to Newmark’s classification, cultural words have five types, which are ecology, material culture, social culture, organizations, customs, activities, procedures, and concepts, gestures, and habits. The study focused on three cultural categories proposed by Newmark (1988), namely ecology, material culture, and social culture, and it applied seven translation strategies outlined by Davies (2003). They are preservation, addition, omission, globalization, localization, transformation, and creation. A total of 356 culturally embedded words and phrases were found in the novel: 69 related to ecology, 185 to material culture, and 102 to social culture. The most prevalent strategy was material culture. The findings also reveal that all seven strategies were employed with varying frequencies. The strategy most frequently used proved to be localization, while creation was the least employed. The study offers a close look at how cultural items are translated into other languages and provides insights that may be useful for researchers and translators in the future.
