520 ## $aThis thesis investigates the translation techniques applied to metaphorical expressions in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone by J.K. Rowling and their Vietnamese equivalents rendered by Lý Lan. Metaphorical language plays a crucial role in literary texts, particularly in fantasy fiction, where it contributes to world building, character depiction, and emotional engagement. The study aims to identify the metaphorical expressions occurring in the source text, examine how these metaphors are translated into Vietnamese, and evaluate the effectiveness of the translation techniques employed. To achieve these objectives, the research adopts a qualitative descriptive–comparative methodology, analyzing a purposive sample of 60 representative metaphorical expressions selected from a total of 75 identified cases in the English source text and their corresponding Vietnamese translations. The analytical framework is primarily based on Peter Newmark’s (1988) model of metaphor translation, which emphasizes practical translation procedures rather than conceptual explanation. The findings reveal that metaphor-preserving strategies, especially metaphor-to-metaphor translation with the same image, are used most frequently, indicating a strong tendency to maintain figurative meaning and stylistic impact in the target text. Other techniques, such as substitution with a different image, conversion to simile, paraphrase, literal rendering, and deletion, are employed to a lesser extent when cultural or linguistic constraints arise. Overall, the study demonstrates that the translator largely succeeds in balancing fidelity and naturalness, preserving the expressive function of metaphors while ensuring readability for Vietnamese readers. The results contribute to a deeper understanding of metaphor translation in English–Vietnamese literary contexts and provide practical implications for translators and scholars concerned with literary translation and stylistic equivalence.
