520 ## $aThis study examines the use and Vietnamese translation of stylistic devices in The Thorn Birds (McCullough, 1977). Drawing on stylistics (Galperin, 1981), cognitive metaphor theory (Lakoff & Johnson, 1980), and translation studies (Newmark, 1988), it identifies seven major devices metaphor, metonymy, simile, euphemism, personification, hyperbole, and irony and analyzes their distribution and translation strategies. Using a mixed-methods approach combining qualitative textual analysis and quantitative frequency data, the study evaluates how stylistic effects are preserved in translation. Findings indicate that the Vietnamese translator employs semantic, communicative, adaptive, idiomatic, and free translation strategies to address linguistic and cultural differences. While literal and semantic methods are favored when conceptual mappings align, adaptive approaches are used where cultural or stylistic adjustments are required. Overall, the translation largely maintains the stylistic and aesthetic qualities of the source text, though some culturally or structurally complex devices undergo modification. The study underscores the translator’s mediating role between fidelity and readability and contributes to English-Vietnamese literary translation research.
