520 ## $aThis study conducts a Translation Quality Assessment (TQA) of the Vietnamese–English translation of Ticket to Childhood by Nguyễn Nhật Ánh, translated into English by William Naythons, with a specific focus on Chapter 9. The research adopts Juliane House’s functional pragmatic model as the theoretical framework to evaluate the extent to which the target text maintains equivalence with the source text in terms of Field, Tenor, and Mode, as well as the Genre of the work. The findings reveal that while the English translation largely succeeds in conveying the general storyline and communicative purpose of the original text, certain deviations occur in the representation of the narrator’s childlike voice, emotional nuances, and cultural specificity. These shifts primarily affect the Tenor and Field components, resulting in partial loss of interpersonal intimacy and experiential meaning. Nevertheless, the translation can be classified as an overt translation, which is generally appropriate for a literary work closely tied to Vietnamese cultural and social contexts. Overall, this study demonstrates the applicability and effectiveness of Juliane House’s model in assessing the quality of literary translation at the chapter level and contributes to a deeper understanding of the challenges involved in translating children’s literature from Vietnamese into English.
