520 ## $aSocial and Emotional Learning (SEL) is widely recognized as a vital component of students' holistic development that can help foster the development of critical skills such as empathy, relationship building, and responsible decision making. While many have articulated the value of SEL in general education and within their own particular contexts, the specific integration of SEL in the context of English Language Teaching (ELT) materials is an unexplored area. Existing research has tended to focus on pedagogical interventions or policy, often without reference to the multimodal construction of these competencies through textbooks, the central artifact of many language classrooms. This study addresses this gap by evaluating the way SEL is defined in a set of understanding SEL textbooks (Levels 1-4) published by Macmillan Education. Employing a qualitative dominant mixed methodology, the research is conducted integrating Multimodal Discourse Analysis (MDA) underpinned on Kress and van Leeuwen's visual grammar, and descriptive quantitative frequency analysis.
